Mayor Balen instructs teachers, staff to renounce party affiliation

Kathmandu - Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) has instructed teachers and employees to give up party affiliation.

In issuing a public notice, Mayor Shah has instructed the teachers and employees under the Metropolitan Corporation to give up their party affiliation immediately.

Stating that there is a provision in the Political Party Act, 2073 that government teachers and employees cannot take membership of the party, Mayor Shah cautioned against joining the party.

Clause C of sub-section 2 of section 14 of the Act provides that tenured professors, teachers and employees of institutions owned or controlled by any government shall not be given membership of political parties.

In addition, he drew the attention of the employees to the fact that there is a provision in the Employee Service Act 2077 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City that they cannot participate in the activities of the party.

He has also made a public appeal to give information on his email if any teacher or staff member is found to be a member of the group.

Earlier, the Election Commission had also warned that teachers and staff members will take action if they join political parties.
